Show (yourself) some love

The other day I listened to Mel Robbins being interviewed on Rich Roll's podcast.

I love everything Mel has to say and I recommend you listen to the podcast (it's here) but there was one story she shared that was profound and I thought might resonate with you.

Many of us have learned to be hard on ourselves because we saw our parents or caretakers do this. Or we have learned to think we are not good enough because we don't always fit perfectly into the norm. Through this process we develop a habit of rejecting ourselves. Mel says that this not only disconnects us from our true selves, but it's ultimately demotivating.

We need encouragement, support and celebration to hit our goals, but most of us believe we aren't worthy of celebration until we achieve/get/have those goals first.

If you know Mel Robbins you'll probably know her High Five Habit. Everyday when she wakes up, she high fives herself in the mirror. Since she started sharing it, this incredibly simple, almost silly habit is helping millions of people to establish a more encouraging and supportive relationship with themselves.

Why does this work?

We associate a high five with a sense of recognition, celebration and affirmation.

She shares several snippets of cool research to back this up. In one study, NBA teams were analysed and those that performed best were the ones who exchanged the most number of fist bumps, high fives and back taps, whereas those who exchanged the least amount of physical contact performed the worst. The same was proven in a different study, where three groups of kids were given a difficult task to complete. The group who had received only a high five beforehand outperformed the other groups who had received verbal encouragement and praise.

It's neurobics.

Neurobics is pairing a physical movement with a change in thought. It's a quicker way to strengthen and create new neural pathways, which is helpful when you are trying to change your thought patterns and improve your self talk.

It's really that simple! You can try it yourself, or try her 5-day High Five Challenge here. Let me know if you give it a try!
